DPP is open to cross-strait exchange, no preconditions

TAIPEI--The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is open to cross-Taiwan Strait engagements that are not subject to political preconditions, a party official said yesterday.

The DPP has always supported exchanges between Taiwan and China and does not resist visits to Taiwan by the Chinese or visits to China by its members, party spokesman Lin Chun-hsien said.

Lin, however, denied a media report that cited DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen as saying that she would be prepared to meet with Zhang Zhijun, head of China's Taiwan Affairs Office, if Zhang visits Taiwan.

He said Tsai had not addressed such an issue, rebutting reports from Taiwan's China Times.

In a front-page top story, the newspaper said the issue of how the DPP should deal with Zhang, who is likely to visit Taiwan later this year.
