Extend nuke plants' operations: Amcham

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Taipei yesterday published its 2014 Taiwan White Paper, calling for the Taiwan government to secure a means of safe and sustainable energy and to prolong the operation of Taiwan's current nuclear power plants.

AmCham Chairman Thomas Fann (范炘) made the remarks in the chamber's annual publication in which AmCham lists suggestions for ways local governments can improve Taiwan's economy.

Fann began the introduction of the White Paper by lauding the Ma administration for its efforts in carrying out a broad range of economic reforms and liberalization.

The chairman noted that, among the 103 suggested reform goals proposed in last year's White Paper, six were labeled "resolved" while another 21 were "showing satisfactory progress." In total, the 27 accounted for 26.2 percent of all suggestions and was the highest percentage gleaned in the past five years.

The six resolved issues are capital markets, intellectual property, manufacturing, medical devices, taxes and telecommunications, while the suggestions that displayed satisfactory progress include asset management, banking, education and training, human resources, intellectual property and licensing, public health, real estate and technology.

The paper advises the government to invest more effort in areas such as Taiwan's health care, in which an increased government budget would most likely improve the lack of new, innovative products in the medical market; consumer protection, which sometimes is being taken "to the extreme" in ways that create barriers to doing businesses in Taiwan; and human resources, in which a higher degree of flexibility is needed in the proposed Dispatch Labor Protection Law.
