Six Puyuma Direct trains to travel between Taipei, Taitung

As the electrified railroad system between Hualien (花蓮) and Taitung (台東) will be operational by the end of this month, the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) yesterday revealed the timetable of its Puyuma Express train, saying that the direct train will travel between Taipei and Taitung six times per day.

The TRA also said that after the line becomes operational, travel time between Taipei and Taitung will be reduced to three hours and 30 minutes by taking the Puyuma Express — the TRA's fastest train.

The administration went on to say that the line capacity of the electrified railroad system between Taipei and Hualien will be raised about 23-25 percent, while line capacity between Taipei and Taitung will increase by 18-40 percent.

TRA Deputy Director-General Chong Ching-ta (鍾清達) said passengers can travel between Taipei and Taitung by taking "direct" or "indirect" trains.

Chong explained that the direct Taipei-Taitung Puyuma Express route stops at three train stations including Songshan Station, Hualien Station and Yuli Station, adding that travel time for direct trains only amounts to three and a half hours.

Indirect trains will stop at eight train stations, including Songshan Station, Yilan Station, Luodong Station, Hualien Station, Ruisui Station, Yuli Station, Chishang Station and Guanshan Station, the TRA said, adding that indirect trains will take three hours and 55 minutes to complete their journey.

The Payuma Express trains that stop at more than eight train stations will take four hours and 16 minutes to travel between Taipei and Taitung, the TRA said.

Taitung County Council Deputy Speaker Chen Hong-tsung (陳宏宗) and several county councilors said the Puyuma Express direct train should stop at Guanshan Station.

Chong responded to their demand, saying that he will take their requests into consideration.
