Couple dies after driving car into sea

A man and his wife died in an apparent act of suicide after the car they were riding in plunged into the water at a fishing port in Keelung on Friday, coast guard officials said.

The couple was said to have bid goodbye to a nearby fisherman before their vehicle accelerated and fell off the pier into the water at about 3:30 a.m., the officials said.

The fisherman who witnessed the incident said he saw them roll down the car window. “Goodbye, don't save me,” the driver said according to the fisherman.

Divers later pulled the couple out of the water, but they were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, officials said.

Investigators found at the pier what they believed to be the couple's belongings, including ID papers and a note written by the man, surnamed Yang, 49. His wife was 46.

The note had their daughter's name and phone number, plus a plea to whoever found it to inform her, the officials said.

Preliminary investigation pointed to economic difficulties as the motivation behind the suicide, officials said.
