Legislature passes revisions to gender equality act

TAIPEI--The Legislative Yuan yesterday passed amendments to the Act of Gender Equality in Employment, including one that will require the publication of the names of employers that discriminate on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.

In addition to being named and shamed, offenders will also face fines of between NT$100,000 (US$3,335) and NT$500,000.

The amendment also includes workers involved in sexual harassment cases.

The amendment also changes the punishment for employers that obstruct employees from taking menstrual or maternity leave, increasing the fines from NT$100,000 up to NT$300,000.

Budget for Water Management Approved

The Legislative Yuan passed a resolution Friday to slash a budget ceiling of NT$66 billion (US$2.2 billion) over six years for water management to NT$33 billion, citing the government's bad financial situation.

The Legislature approved a special budget plan of NT$80 billion for water management in 2006, which ended in late 2013.
