Premier calls for ways to promote saving of energy

TAIPEI -- With summer fast approaching, Premier Jiang Yi-Huah on Thursday instructed the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to come up with innovative ways within a week to encourage reduced energy use.

At a regular Cabinet meeting, Jiang noted that the Dragon Boat Festival on June 2 marks the official start of the summer season in Taiwan — a peak period for energy consumption, according to the Executive Yuan.

In issuing the directive to the MOEA, Jiang cited successful past incentives such as discounts for consumers who reduce their electricity usage, energy-saving competitions, and subsidies for the purchase of “green” household appliances.

Jiang also asked Vice Premier Mao Chih-kuo to convene a series of inter-agency consultations on how to cap Taiwan's growing demand for energy.

Energy demand can be improved by a program to install solar panels on Taiwan rooftops. Renewable energy is the future and should be the present.

The single most important way to save energy is to promote renewable energy and lessen the use of nukes and gas. Taiwan has no gas and must import. Solar panels are the future of energy and should be on all rooftops in Taiwan ASAP.
