Cities show care for disadvantaged with around 30,000 zongzi

TAIPEI -- Charity activities that involve feeding disadvantaged families with zongzi have begun in Taiwan with the approach of the Dragon Boat Festival, the traditional time of year for serving the glutinous rice dumplings.

One temple in Taichung distributed 30,000 zongzi to 600 disadvantaged and low-income families in the municipality in central Taiwan Sunday, a move that won applause from Taichung Mayor Jason Hu.

The showing of care and love for the disadvantaged is "the most lovely feature of Taiwan," Hu said.

Meanwhile, a zongzi-making competition was held in Pingzhen in Taoyuan County that same day, attended by hundreds of local residents.

While participants in the contest competed with each other to wrap zongzi in bamboo leaves as fast as they could, seven community development associations in the city jointly launched a charity program aimed at distributing zongzi to disadvantaged families within their communities in the hope that these families will enjoy a happy festival.

Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice usually stuffed with savory pork, lotus nuts and mushrooms, and wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are traditionally served during the Dragon Boat Festival, which is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar each year and is one of the most important festivals on the Chinese calendar.

This year, the festival takes place June 2.

It is a bad news that the zongzi is not safe to eat. I would like to visit my home town and making rice dumplings with mother by using the freshest material in the village during dragon boat festival. Ann
