Taipei Guest House swan family called 'Black Velvet'

TAIPEI -- Online voters have chosen Black Velvet as the collective name for the newborn black swans kept at the historic Taipei Guest House, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which runs the facility.

Black Velvet (Hei Si Rong) received the most votes out of seven options to celebrate the birth of new cygnets this year. Other options included Water Angels (Shui Tian Shi) and Black Treasure (Hei Bao).

Born in February, the young swans are the third generation of the flock at Taipei Guest House. The first generation was born in 2005, with a second generation born between 2009 to 2014, according to the ministry.

The new parents are now “working hard” to make more brothers and sisters for their offspring, the ministry said.

A prize drawing was also held to thank those who participated in the competition. The list of winners is available on the official event website.
