The National Freeway Bureau (NFB) yesterday said that the freeway toll will be set at a flat rate during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday this year to avoid traffic jams.
The NFB also said that motorized trips may reach as many as 2.6 million per day during this year's holiday from May 31 to June 2.
In addition, the NFB said, the 20 kilometers of free highway usage will be canceled during the holidays.
According to the NFB, the period for using freeways free of charge during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday will be from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The NFB said that the flat rate will be NT$0.9 per kilometer for small vehicles and NT$1.12 for large vehicles.
Drivers traveling from Hsinchu (新竹) to Yanchao (燕巢) on National Highway No. 3 will receive a 20-percent discount on the highway toll.
The NFB also said that there will be high occupancy control on National Highway No. 5, both north- and southbound, during the holidays. This means that each vehicle will have to carry at least three people to be able to access the highway.
According to the NFB, motorized trips will be between 2.4 million and 2.6 million for the first two days of the Dragon Boat Festival this year while the estimate for the last day of the festival reaches 2.1 million to 2.3 million.
The NFB said that drivers go onto the roads during the evening period if they intend to avoid the higher volume of traffic. This will be free of charge
The current freeway toll system was launched in the beginning of this year, charging small-vehicle drivers NT$1.2 per kilometer to use the island's highways, with each car allotted 20 free kilometers per day, the NFB said. After a driver exceeds 200 kilometers within one day the price will drop to NT$0.9 per kilometer.
