Taiwan congratulates BJP on winning India election

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Republic of China's (Taiwan) government on Saturday extended its congratulations to India's opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for winning the country's parliamentary election, which saw its leader Narendra Modi elected as the next prime minister.

Taiwan also congratulated India's government on holding a successful election in the world's biggest democracy, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It expects the two countries will continue to strengthen exchanges in areas such as trade and culture in the future, the statement said.

Taiwan has maintained a friendly relationship with India, with increased bilateral exchanges in trade, education, technology and culture in recent years, the ministry said.

Official results show that Modi's party, the BJP, obtained 282 of 543 parliamentary seats in the May 12 election, giving it a clear majority, according to the Election Commission of India.
