TV news anchor found dead in apparent suicide

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- CTiTV (中天電視) news anchor Erich Shi-wei Shih (史哲維) was found dead in his apartment in Taipei in an apparent suicide yesterday, local media reported. He was 46.

According to the police, Shih was found lying on the kitchen floor of his home in Renai Rd. with a plastic bag on his head at around 5 p.m. by a member of his family. Shih was wearing casual attire, T-shirt and shorts, when he was discovered. There were no signs of forced entry and police officers have found no suicide note at the scene, the police said.

The police have at first identified suicide as a possible cause of death but stressed that further investigation is needed.

Born in 1968, Shih graduated from the Institute of the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University. He spent a substantial portion of his career serving as a foreign correspondent in Washington, D.C. before returning to Taiwan and taking the CTiTV anchor slot in 2009.

CTiTV spokesman Huang Chun-jen (黃俊仁) said yesterday that Shih was an outstanding and professional anchor who will be dearly missed by his colleagues, the CTiTV and Taiwan's news media as a whole.
