Switch of ruling parties a possibility: Wang

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) yesterday stated his belief that a change of ruling party is possible in Taiwan in the future.

During his presentation at the third "Love and Peace Forum" (愛與和平論壇), Wang addressed governmental and political issues. The forum, entitled "Democracy is the Absolute Principle" (民主是硬道理), was first organized by Love and Peace Foundation Chairman Teng Wen-tsung (鄧文聰).

While on the topic of "values of democracy," Wang addressed issues arising from the recent Sunflower Movement, stating that the events enabled the nation to reflect on the true meaning of democracy. Wang also said that he had told the student activists to advance into the future carrying their ideals.

According to Wang, the famous quote "Development is our absolute principle," from late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping (鄧小平) regarding mainland China, has been achieved to a considerable degree.

Currently, said Wang, China is the world's second largest economic power and will soon become the largest. However, Wang said that he looks forward to seeing China implementing the true meaning of democracy through cross-strait reconciliation, which will enable both Taiwan and China to achieve a prosperous future.

Wang later referenced the philosophy of late American political scientist Samuel P. Huntington, stating that a mature country must undergo two alternations of political parties. Thus far, said Wang, Taiwan has experienced two such changes in power and there is the possibility of more party alternations in the future, through which Taiwan may increase its political maturity.

Applauding the peaceful power transition in both of Taiwan's party alternations, Wang went on to state that, on its road to democracy, he hopes Taiwan can serve as an example to other countries.
