AIT verifies Ma doesn't have Green Card: officials

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Presidential Office yesterday disclosed an official document written by American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Managing Director Joseph R. Donovan to Taiwan's de facto ambassador in the U.S., confirming that President Ma Ying-jeou's “abandonment of his former legal permanent resident status has long been included in appropriate U.S. immigration system records.”

Next Magazine on Wednesday published an article claiming that given his “Green Card status,” the president is subject to U.S. taxes under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).

The magazine explained that it wrote an email to IRS Beijing using the president's “Green Card details” and asked, while posing as “Mark Y. J. Ma,” whether or not the president is required to pay taxes to the U.S. government.

According to the magazine, the IRS explained in its response that a Green Card can only become invalid if the holder submits a written statement to the relevant authorities.

The magazine admitted that it did not know whether the president had submitted a written statement to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), but stressed that if the president had not, it would mean that he “lied” to the nation by saying that his Green Card had expired.

The magazine further claimed that if the president hasn't already submitted a written statement to the USCIS, then he would have to pay taxes to the U.S., adding that the president is poised to become an “international laughingstock.”

The magazine demanded that the president apologize to the nation.

In response to the article, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) blasted the president, describing him as shameless and dishonest.

Former Chairmen Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) and Yu Shyi-kun (游錫?) made similar remarks while speaking to the press.

The Presidential Office held a press conference the day the article was published, saying that if the president is indeed subject to U.S. taxes, he would take political responsibility by resigning.

The following day, the Presidential Office disclosed the AIT statement, refuting the magazine's claims.

According to the document, the managing director of the AIT confirmed that the president has long abandoned his Green Card status, adding that the “issue is therefore closed.”

In response to the opposition's criticism, the Presidential Office asked Su, Yu and Hsieh to publicly promise that they would be willing to apologize to the nation for calling the head of state “shameless,” an “international laughingstock” and a “liar.”

Green card or not, Ma can claim residency in the USA through his American children!

This isn't a big deal, but due to the immaturity of politics in Taiwan it is turned into an issue.

IF AIT did actually give a response, SHAME on them. Here we go with the US government involving in local politics, and why on Earth are they supporting this clown of a president? I am utterly shocked by AIT’s confirmation! This is private information, and regardless if they had Ma's approval or not, it is none of AIT’s business to reveal this information to the public! Let the public simmer for awhile! And let FATCA start to be known here so local people can finally figure out how bad this law really is! AIT’s action, if true is sad and unacceptable!

These three stooges (DPP bigwigs, at that) calling the president "a liar, shameless, an international laughingstock" is more fittingly to be applied to them. They don't need to apologize because the world knows their true colors, and only the most stupid believes them. Maybe they are too old to learn and mend their ways.

What's shameful is the DPP politicians basing their attacks on a Next magazine article, which has been proven false by the US government. Who's the laughingstock now?!

The truth of Green Card issue has now been brought into daylight. Su Tseng-chang, Frank Hsieh and Yu Shy-kun who call Ma Ying-jeou shameless, an international laughingstock and a lair become 100 percent shameless, international laughingstocks, and liars. All of them are incumbent or former president of the DPP emblematic of what the DPP is like. As the presidents, so is the DPP. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Ma is blowing smoke. Ask him for his I-407. Donovan hasn't worked at AIT in years. And only INS can make a determination about residence status. AIT doesn't have that authority.

I don't think the AIT's official document is US government involving local politics. Without this document, Ma Ying-jeou's wrong will never be set right.

No sooner had been made to the public the AIT’s official document clarifying Ma’s Green Card issue, Mr. Su Tseng-chang, President of DPP further demanded Ma Ying-Jeou to bring forth the letter indicating when he abandoned his Green Card from US government. Even if Mr. Ma brings forth such letter, Mr. Su will not be contented, never ceasing his other demands, for his real purpose behind is to get Ma down.

DPP is not a progressive party. It's a regressive regime that no longer earns the support of many.

These three Stooges’ repetitive sticking to an old issue should earn them free medicine for Alzheimer’s.

I don't think the truth has been brought into daylight, as the US government (AIT here) has given only half an answer. Let's assume Ma really executed the procedure and abandoned his green card, then it is important to know when that has been done: After he announced in public that he does not have one? The AIT cannot and did not give the full answer: When were the mandatory steps executed?

This whole story and issue is total DPP bulls#!t just like in the last election when Tsai was blaming the KMT for the fact she couldn't speak Hakka. Immature politics focusing on needless things instead of the real issue such as energy sources, pollution, unemployment, health and education etc.

Sadly, too many idiots buy into this and will vote based on a personality contest instead of politics.
