Temperatures in Taiwan soar to highest this year

TAIPEI -- The temperature in Taitung, eastern Taiwan, rose to 37.6 degrees Celsius Wednesday, the highest in the country so far this year, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The high in Taitung was recorded at 12:05 p.m., the bureau said.

The mercury also surged to 35.6 degrees in Taipei at 11:21 a.m. Wednesday, the highest in the city this year, the bureau said.

In Keelung, Hsinchu and the districts of Banqiao and Danshui in New Taipei, the temperatures recorded were also the highest in those areas so far this year.

The mercury climbed to 35.3 degrees in Banqiao District at noon; 35.3 degrees in Keelung at 12:47 p.m.; 34.9 degrees in Danshui District at 12:43 p.m., and 34.2 degrees in Hsinchu at 11:45 p.m., according to the weather bureau's data.
