Innolux finds employee who made low-wage claim

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Innolux Corp. (群創光電), one of the subsidiaries of Hon Hai Group, yesterday said that after four days of searching it finally found the employee that claimed she is earning NT$22,000 per month.

Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘) last week said he would acquire companies that offer wages lower than NT$22,000 per month and then raise the salaries of their workers. Gou's remark raised heated discussion on the Internet.

One netizen identifying herself as an employee of Innolux Corp. said she is earning exactly NT$22,000 per month. The netizen urged the tycoon to increase the pay of his own workers before thinking about other companies.

Hon Hai Group last Saturday announced that it will raise the salary of workers at three of its subsidiaries to the same wage level of the parent company from May 1. The three subsidiaries are Innolux Corp., Foxconn Technology Co. (富士康) and Zhen Ding Tech (臻鼎科技).

Gou said at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., engineers and administrative employees with bachelor's degrees are offered starting monthly salaries between NT$36,000 and NT$47,000. Jobs that do not require a college degree — such as production operator — are paid at least NT$26,000 per month, he said.

The tycoon's announcement was seen as a response to the controversy over the netizen's comment.

Innolux Corp. yesterday said it has found the employee who made the claim on the Internet and explained the firm's salary structure to her. Innolux cited the employee as saying that she misunderstood Gou's remark and she's willing to apologize to Gou for making an inappropriate comment about him on the Internet.

Innolux said the reason for finding the employee was not to punish her but to discover the truth. The firm further explained that if it really mistreats an employee then it will make amends, noting that if what she claims was not the truth then the firm shall defend its reputation.

Activist Li Po-chang (李柏樟) also claimed on the Internet that he used to work at Innolux Corp. for a short period of time, noting that his base salary was only NT$16,500 per month. He added that his monthly salary was less than NT$22,000 even with allowances.

Innolux responded to Lee's remark, saying that as he only served the company for less than a month, there is no possibility for his salary to exceed the amount he specified.
