Hike in electricity prices for summer to commence June

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台電) yesterday said the summertime electricity price hike will take effect on June 1, noting that to take an average family that uses 500 kilowatt-hours per month for example, the family would need to spend NT$204 more on electricity during the summer.

The state-owned Taipower said as people use electricity the most in summer, it has to activate the electricity generators that use more expensive fuel materials in order to meet the demands on electricity.

In light of the rising cost of electricity, Taipower runs on a system of raising electricity prices between June and September every year.

The firm went on to say that although the electricity price is higher in summer and cheaper in other seasons, the annual income of power generation is more or less the same every year. The purpose of carrying out the summer electricity rise is to remind people of the importance of conserving energy, Taipower said.

Taipower explained that for households that use less than 120 kilowatt-hours per month, the electricity price is the same as in other seasons, which is NT$2.1 per kilowatt-hour.

For electricity consumption between 120 and 500 kilowatt-hours per month, the price will increase from NT$3.38 per kilowatt-hour to NT$4.04; monthly electricity use between 501 and 700 kilowatt-hours will increase from NT$3.83 per kilowatt-hour to NT$4.62; monthly electricity consumption above 700 kilowatt-hours will increase from NT$4.33 per kilowatt-hour to NT$5.2. Taipower calculates the electricity price once every 2 months.

As another example, Taipower said a household that uses 330 kilowatt-hours monthly will spend NT$1,630 for two months in other seasons, but will have to pay NT$1,772 for two months between June and September.

If a unit uses 700 kilowatt-hours per month, the Taipower said the electricity cost will increase from NT$4,649 to NT$5,441 for 2 months.
