Reddit user publishes maps of world's most popular boys' names

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Reddit user published a world map of the most popular first names for boys and Chia-hao (家豪) tops the list as the most common name for boys in Taiwan.
Religions do not play a major role when it comes to naming newborns in Taiwan; many people are named by fortune tellers. Some people end up with very popular names and often run into people with the same name.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the most popular name for boys in Taiwan in 2012 was Chia-hao, which for years has also been the most common name seen on national college entrance exams.
As for other countries in Asia, based on the world map published on Reddit, Wei (偉) is the most popular first name for boys in China and the top two most common names are Chang Wei and Wang Wei.
In South Korea, Min-jun, the name of the leading male character in an insanely popular Korean drama that aired this year, tops the list as the most common name for boys, according to the map from Reddit.
The map also showed that Hiroto is the top choice for baby boys in Japan.
According to the map, in the U.S. the popularity of names varies widely from state to state. In Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Louisiana and Arkansas, Ethan is the most common name for boys.
William, Michael and Jacob are the three most popular names across the east coast of the U.S., according to the Reddit map.
Other names like Anthony, Daniel, Jose, Alexander, Carter, Isaiah, Jayden and James also top lists as the most popular names in various states across the nation.
In Canada, Liam takes the title as the most popular name for boys while Santiago tops the list as the most common names for boys in Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia, according to the map.
The map showed that in the UK, birthplace of best selling Harry Potter series, the most popular first name for boys is indeed Harry.
According to the map, many popular names are inspired by religion. For example, Georgi is the most popular name in eastern European Christian Orthodox countries, including Bulgaria, Greece and Georgia.
Meanwhile, the map showed that in the Middle East, North Africa, Tajikistan and Malaysia, variations on Mohammed dominate as the most popular names for boys.
