Taiwan reaches semis of table tennis championship

TAIPEI--Taiwan's top-ranked table tennis player Chuang Chih-yuan led the country's team to best South Korea 3-2 at the 2014 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Tokyo Saturday, earning the Chinese Taipei team a spot in the semifinals.

The win over South Korea in the Men's Championship Division is the best Taiwan has ever done in the tournament despite a tough start when Taiwanese player Chen Chien-an was defeated by South Korea's Joo Saehyuk in a close duel that ended 2-3.

Chuang managed to bring a series of wins against South Korean rival Jung Youngsik, however, ending the game early with a score of 3-1.

Cho Eonrae from South Korea's team then rallied to defeat Taiwan's Chiang Hung-Chieh 1-3, but Chuang managed to recover and win the match in five games (9-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-6, 11-2) to pave the way for Chen to seal the victory in what ended up as an exhausting three-hour shootout.

The World Table Tennis Championships, which opened April 28, have been held since 1926 and biennially since 1957. The tournament is set to conclude Monday.
