Cross-Strait Film Festival to begin in Taipei and move on to Kaosiung

TAIPEI--Moviegoers in Taiwan will be able to see more Chinese films over the next two months when the 6th Cross-Strait Film Festival kicks off in Taipei and Kaohsiung, offering blockbuster and art-house movies from China.

The annual festival, to open May 31 in Taipei, will screen seven Chinese films, most of which were newly released this year and have not been previously screened in Taiwan, according to the festival's organizers.

The seven films include "Where Are We Going, Dad?" a documentary film based on a popular parent-child TV reality show in China. The film was the second best-selling film in China in the first quarter of 2014, organizers said.

Two other blockbuster films — romance drama "Beijing Love Story" and romantic comedy "Ex-Files" — will also be screened at the festival.

The other films are romance-comedy "Up in the Wind," crime thriller "Police Diary," "Forever Young," a film about youth, and "Dancing in the Room," which tells the story of China's young people leaving their hometowns to work in cities.

The Taiwan part the festival will take place at Huashan 1914 Creative Park's Spot Huashan cinema from May 31 to June 4, and at the Kaohsiung Film Archive from June 3-6.

In the festival's other segment, Taiwanese films will be screened in the Chinese cities of Xiamen, Taizhou and Xinghua from June 13-19, organizers said.

Only 10 Chinese films are allowed into Taiwan each year, determined by a random drawing of lots by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture.

Film festivals, however, are allowed to screen Chinese films that are not among the 10.
