Da Vinci 3D printers given to NTNU by XYZ printing

TAIPEI -- Taiwan-based XYZ printing Inc. donated three of its da Vinci 1.0 3D printers to National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) yesterday, hoping that more students can take advantage of the tools in their research.

NTNU is among more than 10 local universities and schools that have received such donations from XYZprinting, a joint venture between two subsidiaries of the New Kinpo Group, a Taiwanese electronics conglomerate.

The company has donated about 40 to 50 3D printers to academic institutions since January to spur students' creativity and the development of related applications, said Gary Shu, senior manager of XYZprinting's Market Development Division.

"We're hoping that students and teachers can be inspired when they use the 3D printers, and their feedback can help us in our search for opportunities in overseas markets," Shu said at the donation ceremony.

NTNU Vice President Cheng Chih-fu said such a partnership between academia and the private sector could nurture more "seed teachers" capable of developing talent for the 3D printing industry, which some see as the potential catalyst of a third industrial revolution.

The entry-level da Vinci 1.0 3D printer impressed the public and judges at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where it earned an Editor's Choice Award from thanks to its US$499 price tag.

3D printing is the automated process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape based on a digital model. The technology promises big changes in the design, prototyping and manufacturing processes of a wide range of industries.
