KMT mayors to become the party's vice chairmen

TAIPEI--Ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou has nominated Taipei, New Taipei and Taichung mayors as the party's vice chairmen as part of an effort to reform the party, KMT sources said Tuesday.

The sources said the nominations of Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌), Eric Chu (朱立倫) and Jason Hu (胡志強) was expected to win approval from the party's Central Standing Committee the following day.

The three will replace incumbent Vice Chairmen Lin Feng-cheng (林豐正), Chan Chun-po (詹春柏) and John Chiang (蔣孝嚴), who have tendered their resignation, according to the sources.

Fearing a split within the party as pressure grows on the government, Ma is seeking to consolidate his power over the executive and legislative branches of the government by slashing one-third of the KMT Central Committee members and bringing potential opponents Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin, Taichung Mayor Jason Hu, and New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu on board as deputy chairmen. This is a classic move employed by autocratic governments throughout history (see The Dictator's Handbook by Alastair Smith).

So, I see Jason Hu already has his new job lined up as he would otherwise have been on the unemployment rolls at the end of the year.
