Gov't aims to stop motorcyclists stopping on bridges, in tunnels

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Traffic authorities have launched a campaign to crack down on motorcyclists illegally stopping on bridges and inside tunnels.

The authorities said they have often received complaints about motorcyclists stopping on bridges to snap pictures of a beautiful sunset or inside tunnels to put on raincoats after it has started raining.

Stopping at these locations is illegal and dangerous, an official with the transport ministry's Department of Railways and Highways was cited by the United Evening News as saying.

Violators could be fined NT$300 to NT$600, the official said, warning that motorcyclists using smartphones to take pictures may also be violating the law banning drivers from using mobile devices while driving.

The transport ministry's road safety officials admitted that they have never previously run any campaigns raising awareness of such violations.
