Taiwan energy conference urged amid Nuke 4 debate

TAIPEI--Taoyuan County Magistrate Wu Chih-yang called for a national conference on energy to be held amid intense controversy in Taiwan over the nearly completed fourth nuclear power plant and nuclear power in general.

The ruling and opposition parties should find common ground and draft an energy policy for the country, Wu said during a visit to the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research in Taoyuan.

A nationwide energy conference would help the public reach consensus, he said, adding that it would be more appropriate for a national referendum on the fourth nuclear power plant to take place after such discussions.

The conference should cover such issues as the alternative energies Taiwan could adopt if nuclear energy is scrapped, how to combat possible higher electricity rates, and the implications a nuclear-free homeland would have for Taiwan's economic development.
