Philippines deports total of 35 local fraud suspects

TAIPEI -- Thirty-five Taiwanese nationals, who were arrested in the Philippines earlier this month in connection with telephone scams targeting Chinese citizens, were repatriated Thursday, prosecutors said.

Escorted by 18 police officers, the suspects were taken to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office for questioning soon after their return.

They were part of a group of 46 people who were nabbed in the Southeast Asian country in a cross-border operation that was launched April 1.

The ringleader and another key member were arrested in Taiwan, while three others were caught in China.

Having set up several phone stations in the Philippines, the ring members posed as law enforcement officials and police and called people in China to swindle them out of their money, prosecutors said.
