Travelers to Middle East warned of deadly disease

TAIPEI --- People planning to travel to the Middle East should pay attention to their personal hygiene, as the season for an often fatal disease has begun there, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said.

Cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) could be on the rise in the near future, according to the CDC, urging Middle East-bound travelers to avoid visiting farmland and having contact with camels or people with respiratory symptoms.

The disease tends to become prevalent from April and peak in September, the CDC explained, adding that no cases have been confirmed in Taiwan.

According to the World Health Organization, 228 MERS-CoV cases had been confirmed as of mid-April, including 92 deaths, mainly in the Middle East.
