AIT to open new community garden

TAIPEI--The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said it will open a new community garden at its Taipei office this week to mark the annual Earth Day celebration, to show its support for protecting the environment.

The AIT Community Garden will be opened at a ceremony on April 22, during which Christopher Marut, director of AIT's Taipei Office, will deliver remarks, according to AIT, which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of diplomatic ties.

On the same day, employees at AIT's Kaohsiung branch in southern Taiwan will participate in picking up litter at the Chai Shan hiking trail, a popular hiking area, and join volunteers at the Tzu Chi Foundation in sorting materials for recycling, AIT said. Noting Kaohsiung City's efforts to adopt green policies, AIT said its Kaohsiung branch will move to a new office, located in the China Steel building with earth-friendly features in the next few months, in a bid to demonstrate its commitment to protecting the environment.

Earth Day began in 1970, as an event to raise awareness of the natural environment and environmental issues. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day.
