158 locals denied visa-free entry to foreign countries

TAIPEI--The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday urged citizens to pay attention to the requirements for visa-free travel, pointing out that 158 people were denied entry to foreign countries last year because they could not present the necessary documents for visa-free entry.

The number represents a 45 percent increase from 2009, the ministry said.

Over 100 countries and areas worldwide now offer visa-waiver treatment to Republic of China passport holders, who are required in most cases to present documents such as airline tickets and hotel reservations and provide information pertaining to the purpose of their visit, the ministry said.

Before traveling, citizens should check in advance to learn the requirements of the countries they are planning to visit, the foreign ministry advised.
