Foreign spouses in 13% of recent local marriages

TAIPEI--A total of 39,071 marriages were registered in Taiwan in the first three months of the year, with nearly 13 percent being cross-national unions, according to figures released by the Interior Ministry on Saturday.

The figures showed a 1.2 percent increase in total marriage registrations from 38,594 in the same period of last year.

According to the data, 87.3 percent of the marriages from January to March this year were between Taiwanese couples, while 12.7 percent involved foreign nationals.

Most of the foreign spouses — 57.8 percent — were from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau; 25 percent from Southeast Asia; and 17.2 percent from other regions, the figures indicated.

In the three-month period, marriages involving foreign nationals increased 0.4 percent from 2013, the ministry reported. It said those that included Southeast Asian spouses increased 13.5 percent, while those that involved spouses from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau dropped 7.4 percent.

The number of foreign brides decreased by 2.3 percent in the first three months of the year, while the number of foreign grooms increased 10.8 percent, according to the data.

The statistics for cross-national marriages in the first quarter showed that 67.3 percent of the brides were from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau; 19.2 percent from Vietnam; and 3.9 percent from Indonesia.

Nationals from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau also accounted for the highest percentage of grooms (25.4 percent), followed by Americans (14.1 percent) and Japanese (13.3 percent), the data showed.
