MND urged to shorten relocation time for arsenal in South Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Lawmakers yesterday urged the military to shorten the time needed to relocate an arsenal located in downtown Kaohsiung City in order to make way for new projects to boost the city's future development.

During an inspection tour to the military's 205th Arsenal, located at Cianjhen District (前鎮區), Kuomintang lawmaker Huang Chao-shun (黃昭順) and the Democratic Progressive Party's Lin Tai-hua(林岱樺) both urged the military and city government to cut down the time needed to complete the relocation of the military installation to four and a half years from the proposed eight years.

The original plan proposed by the Defense Ministry and the Kaohsiung Government is to complete the financial planning for the project by the end of April before having the overall project approved by the Cabinet in June.

The city government estimated that the completion or the relocation could take as long as eight years.

In response, city government and Defense Ministry officials who accompanied the lawmakers during the tour all agreed to do their best in speeding up the relocation process.

The 58-hectare arsenal, under the military's Combined Logistics, has been located in the city since its establishment in the 1940s.

For decades, nearby citizens have been calling the military to relocate the facility since many believe the compound situated at transportation hub of the city has hindered the city's development.

The Defense Ministry finally announced last December that it will relocate the arsenal to the city's Dashu District (大樹區). Kaohsiung City is expected to turn the arsenal site into a compound consisted of green lands, theme parks and business centers.
