Premier calls for zero-base principle for 2015 budget

TAIPEI -- Premier Jiang Yi-huah on Thursday instructed Cabinet agencies to follow the principle of zero-based budgeting and examine the priority and necessity of their planned spending for 2015 within a tight budget.

The spending proposals will also be closely examined by a panel, headed by Vice Premier Mao Chih kuo, which is responsible for improving government finances, Jiang said during a weekly Cabinet meeting, during which the guidelines for the government's 2015 budget proposals were approved.

According to the guidelines, the government's spending for the next fiscal year, which corresponds with the calendar year, will focus on boosting Taiwan's economic development, narrowing the rural-urban divide; fostering an anxiety-free society; creating a sustainable environment; strengthening culture, education, science and technology; deepening cross-Taiwan Strait exchanges and promoting a volunteer military.
