100,000 visit Spring Scream in two days

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Over 100,000 people visited the annual Spring Scream music and arts festival at Kenting Lighthouse National Park in the first two days of the event, the Pingtung County Police Bureau announced yesterday.

According to police, there were about 23,000 vehicles hitting the town on April 3 and 4, and adding the estimated number of visitors who entered Kenting via public transportation, over 100,000 people have attended Spring Scream so far this year.

Despite the large number of people attending the festival, police said, there was a decrease of about 10,000 to 20,000 visitors compared to the number of people from the first two days last year.

Police said that the popular band Mayday took the stage last night as well as popular female singer Jeannie Hsieh (謝金燕), who performed at the Kenting foam party, and they still expect more people to show up on the last day of the festival.

According to police, there were about 6,000 vehicles entering Hengchuen on April 3, while 17,000 vehicles were calculated to enter Hengchuen on April 4.

The Kenting music and arts festival has a total of seven concerts this year, the Kenting Travel website said, and 15,000 tickets have been sold so far this year, which was a decrease of 5,000 tickets from last year.

According to the Kenting Travel website, the reason why fewer people showed up at the Spring Scream this year was the fact that there were four consecutive days off last year during festival time, compared to only three days off this year.

The website said that the poor weather on the first day of the festival and an increase in ticket prices also affected turnout.

The Sunflower Movement also contributed to the decrease in visitors this year, the website added.

21 People Busted for Drug Use at Party

Pingtung police busted 21 people at a bed and breakfast for allegedly taking ketamine in Hengchuen late Friday night.

According to police, they received an anonymous report saying that a party potentially involving illegal drugs at a bed and breakfast in Hengchuen area was under way at around 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Police said that they discovered 21 men and women barbecuing and taking ketamine in a cabin with electronic music playing.

According to police, about five to six people at the scene have criminal records involving drug-related charges.

The police said that this case will be transferred to the prosecutors office based on Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act regulations.
