Taipei kids spent 20 hrs. a week on screens in '13

TAIPEI -- Children in Taipei spent an average of 20 hours per week in front of television or computer screens last year, the city government's Department of Social Welfare said in a report Wednesday, warning of the dangers of online addiction.

The report was part of an investigation carried out by the department every four years to gain a better understanding about the mental and physical development of children and young people, their social participation and living conditions.

Almost 50 percent of children surveyed said they suffer anxiety and depression if they reduce or stop using the Internet, while 63 percent thought about using it again after they got disconnected, the department said.

According to the report, 54 percent of the children were not satisfied about the amount of time they were allowed to be online.
