Hong Kong teens indicted on forgery, theft charges

TAIPEI--Two young Hong Kong women involved in a highly publicized case of alleged stealing and vandalism were indicated Thursday on charges of forgery, embezzlement and theft, Taipei district prosecutors said.

Tsang Lai-wun, 18 and Yao Hiu-tung, 19, made headlines across Taiwan last month after they used false identities to rent a room in Taipei, which they allegedly vandalized before making away with a television set.

They then rented another room, again using false identities.

They were also accused of stealing two hats from a store in Taipei.

The pair was arrested March 16 and has since been detained.

According to prosecutors, Tsang and Yao have reached a settlement with their former landlord on the damage to the room and are therefore not indicted for some of the offenses. The prosecutors also asked the court to show leniency since the accused have admitted to their wrongdoing.
