Chen Shui-bian hospitalized due to severe headache

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), who is currently serving a jail term at a prison hospital in the central city of Taichung, has been transferred and hospitalized at a nearby civilian hospital since Monday, a hospital representative said yesterday.

Wu Shao-bai (吳少白), vice president of Taichung Veterans General Hospital (台中榮民總醫院, TVGH) made the announcement during a hearing at the Legislature's National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee in response to a question raised by an opposition lawmaker on Chen's condition.

According to Wu, the former president visited the hospital because of a severe headache last Saturday. Chen later returned to Taichung Prison's Pei Teh Hospital the same day.

A day later, the TVGH sent a medical team to visit Chen at the prison hospital and Chen continued to complain about his headache and said it had not gotten any better, according to Wu.

The hospital decided to have Chen hospitalized on Monday for further examination, he added.

Wu was at the committee with Veterans Affairs Commission (VAC, 退輔會) Minister Tung Hsiang-lung (董翔龍) to field questions on the VAC's ongoing project to offer medical assistance to R.O.C. veterans.

Chen, who is serving a 20-year prison term for corruption, has been serving his time at Taichung Prison's Pei Teh Hospital, where a special medical zone has been set up for him, since April, 2013.

The former president has been diagnosed with various complications, among them include severe depression, sleep apnea, non-typical Parkinson's disease, a speech disorder and mild cerebral atrophy. He also tried to commit suicide in June, 2013.
