Taiwanese flock to China e-shopping websites: poll

TAIPEI -- Taiwanese Internet users are flocking to Chinese shopping sites that offer a friendly platform for overseas users, according to a consumer survey released Tuesday by the Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute (MIC).

The results of the study found that 50 percent of local Internet users made purchases on Chinese shopping sites last year, an increase of 11.9 percentage points from 2012, ranking China top among foreign shopping sites for local consumers.

Japan was ranked second, with 48.9 percent of the respondents saying they had shopped on Japanese sites, followed by North America with 27.4 percent, the government-funded research institute said.

An incentive for Taiwanese online shoppers is that Chinese shopping sites are increasingly offering traditional Chinese-language versions to build a more friendly and convenient platform for Taiwanese customers, the MIC said.
