DPP heavyweights to attend protest on Ketagalan Blvd.

TAIPEI -- Heavyweights of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will take part in a demonstration rally in front of the Presidential Office over a controversial service trade pact with China scheduled for Sunday.

The student-led protesters that have occupied the Legislature since March 18 have decided to stretch their battlefront by calling 100,000 people to take to the streets on that day, and the DPP has lent its support.

DPP spokesman Lin Chun-hsien said DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang will attend the rally, but only in his capacity as a citizen, to express support for the cause.

The DPP will also respect the wishes of the organizers and will not don campaign vests or the party's flag during the rally, Lin said.

Former DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen's office said that Tsai will be present at the rally, but will not give a speech. She will, however, be dressed in black in answer to the call of the protesting students.

Former Premier Yu Shyi-kun and former Vice President Annette Lu will also attend.

Former Premier Frank Hsieh said he will also be present, adding that the students are pursuing public interests, not their personal ends, and should be encouraged.

Wellington Ku, a lawyer and Taipei mayoral hopeful of the DPP, said he will take part along with other lawyers. Ko Wen-je, a National Taiwan University Hospital surgeon and a likely DPP candidate for the Taipei mayoral position, said he will attend the rally, mainly to support medical aid stations there.

The DPP should attend because this is their group that is rallying. Stop fooling the people because we've heard cries of "wolves" too many times. Stop deceiving people and justifying the violent and destructive acts of your followers, because the smarter and more intelligent sector of the population can not be fooled. The sad thing is, even if it's true that there is a wolf about to attack you, nobody will believe in your cries anymore, because of the many times that you've fooled the people.
