Ma holds top meeting on dispute over China pact

TAIPEI -- President Ma Ying-jeou and other top officials believe that the controversy over a trade in services agreement with China should focus again on a line-by-line review of the pact, a presidential office spokeswoman said yesterday.

The president, Vice-President Wu Den-yih and Premier Jiang Yi-huah met Monday to discuss ongoing demonstrations over the pact after the ruling Kuomintang tried to ram it through the Legislative Yuan last week without a line-by-line review as had been promised.

Presidential Office spokesperson Garfie Li said the meeting's participants saw the only real solution to the stalemate as returning the focus to the legislative process and screening and voting on the pact article by article.
