TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Organized by the R.O.C. armed forces, a total of 17 camps to be held around Taiwan this coming summer will soon be open for applications, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced yesterday.
The 17 camps will be held around Taiwan and the outlying islands of Kinmen and Matzu from June 30 to Aug. 2, MND General Political Warfare Bureau section chief Yu Tsung-chi (余宗基) said yesterday.
Some of the most popular choices among the camps include parachute training and amphibious reconnaissance, also called frogmen, training camps, he said.
These boot camps allow participants to experience military life and are highly anticipated by students, especially female ones because they normally do not have the opportunity to do such training, unlike their male counterparts, he said.
Another reason for the MND summer camps' popularity among students is their relative cheapness, ranging from NT$340 to NT$1,345 for 1- to 5-day tours.
There are a total of around 3,000 slots available for this year's events, according to the MND.
But according to previous experience, these camps are highly popular so that MND will hold a public lottery draw next month to pick the winners.
The online application will officially begin from 8 a.m. on March, 31 and conclude at 5 p.m. on April 11, the MND said.
