Magnitude-5.3 earthquake strikes off coast of Hualien

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck off Taiwan's east coast Monday evening, with light shaking felt far away in Taipei in the north.
The quake occurred at 9:12 p.m. with the epicenter located in the seas 76.7 kilometers east of the monitoring station at Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 15.8 kilometers.
Tremors at an intensity of 3 on Taiwan's 7-tier scale were recorded in Yilan County in the northeast, while Hualien County's Heping Township recorded an intensity of 2, Hehuanshan in Nantou County recorded a 2, and Taipei recorded a 1.
