TAIPEI--Temperatures in northern areas of Taiwan and the offshore counties are expected to drop significantly Thursday as a strong cold air mass approaches, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.
The mercury could drop to lows of less than 10 degrees Celsius in those areas in the period Thursday night to Saturday morning, the bureau said.
In general, temperatures of 10-18 degrees can be expected in Northern Taiwan until Saturday, as a cold air mass envelops the country, forecasters said.
They forecast a temperature range of 12-20 degrees in Central Taiwan, and 16-26 degrees in Southern Taiwan, during the three-day period.
The chill is likely to ease off after Saturday, with temperatures increasing steadily into next week, the bureau said.
Meanwhile, Northern Taiwan can expect heavy rain and thunderstorms late Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said.
