Prosecutors plan to appeal military abuse case verdict

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Prosecutors will appeal a verdict in a high-profile military abuse case, Justice Minister Luo Ying-shay said yesterday, amid criticism that the court's sentences were too lenient.

Prosecutors, who have yet to receive the verdict, came to their decision after accessing the 230-page verdict through an online database, Luo told reporters.

An appeal will be filed within 10 days after the verdict arrives, she said.

On March 7, the Taoyuan District Court convicted 13 defendants on charges including abuse of power, offenses against personal freedom and negligent homicide in connection with the death of Army corporal Hung Chung-chiu.
