TAIPEI--Hundreds of shoppers in Taiwan braved the rain on Saturday to line up on the opening day of American apparel retailer Gap Inc.'s first store on the island.
Located in Taipei's bustling Xinyi District, the three-story Gap flagship store offers clothing for men, women, children and infants.
Gap is the latest global clothing and accessory brand to venture into Taiwan, on the heels of Japan's Uniqlo and Spain's Zara.
To help serve the massive crowds, the U.S. multinational firm said it dispatched over 100 staff from Taiwan and even Hong Kong and Shanghai on the first day to try to meet every customer's needs on-site.
"All you can try out," Gap staff shouted and shuttled among customers.
The store was so packed that some people had to wait for half an hour to get into a fitting room.
To celebrate the opening, Gap released limited edition T-shirts with "GAP" and "TAIWAN" in big print, which were sold out within a few hours, the store said.
It added that another limited edition featuring the skyscraper Taipei 101 will soon be available.
