CIB arrests, escorts drug dealer from Thailand to Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) on Friday said that it managed to arrest and escort a drug dealer, surnamed Chen, from Thailand to Taiwan recently, according to the Central News Agency (CNA).

The 38-year-old Chen was reported to authorities in 1999 over his involvement in drug trafficking.

According to CNA, the Miaoli District Prosecutors Office, in collaboration with the Taichung County Police Bureau and Taichung City Investigation Bureau, set up a dragnet and successfully arrested Chen and others, confiscating 11 kilograms of amphetamine and 81.5 kilograms of ketamine.

On March 2010, Chen took flight to Xiamen immediately after being sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment by the Taiwan High Court. The Taipei Prosecutors Office issued an arrest warrant in June.

On Feb. 20, the International Criminal Affairs Division tasked its Thailand liaison officer with cooperating with Thailand Immigration Office police to launch a manhunt as soon as the division was notified that Chen had traveled from Vietnam to Thailand. Thirteen days later, on March 4, Chen was captured.

The CIB stated that years of intelligence exchanges and comparisons, as well as international cooperation, have welded a firm mutual trust and effective cooperation model between Taiwan and Thailand police. According to CIB data, five Taiwanese fugitives have been deported back to Taiwan to serve sentences over the past six months.
