Heavy penalties proposed amid growing sex assaults

TAIPEI--People convicted of sexual assault should face harsher punishments as a deterrent to certain forms of rape and other sex crimes, opposition lawmakers said Friday.

In addition to heavier penalties, the ministries of the Interior and Health and Welfare should set up a designated task force to tackle the issue, opposition Democratic Progressive Party Legislators Chiu Chih-wei and Ho Hsin-chun said at a press conference.

The legislators' proposal comes in the wake of a spate of crimes known as "corpse picking" in which people, usually men, hang around nightclubs to take advantage of drunken women and perform indecent acts when they are unconscious.
