Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes southern Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A magnitude 4.4 earthquake jolted southern Taiwan at 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The earthquake's epicenter was located 43.5 kilometers east to Chiayi City Hall at a depth of 5.6 km, bureau officials said.

The strongest tremor, with an intensity of 4, was felt in Taoyuan District in Kaohsiung City.
