Lawmaker tells Cabinet newbies not to dally

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Chao Tien-lin (趙天麟) yesterday at the Legislative Yuan summoned the newly appointed Minister of Science and Technology Simon Chang (張善政), Interior Minister Chen Wei-zen (陳威仁) and Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) Minister Wei Kuo-yen (魏國彥) for an interpellation session.

Chao during the interpellation said the recently reshuffled Cabinet should "tighten its screws," stressing that the newly appointed ministers should familiarize themselves with their duties as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) was officially upgraded from the National Science Council (NSC) on Monday, nevertheless, it received massive criticism from the public, which said that the MOST official website looks as though it was designed by "a junior high school student."

Moreover, the Executive Yuan announced the personnel arrangement for MOST a week ago, but when asked to comment on the website issue on Monday, local reporters could not find the MOST spokesperson as the ministry had not appointed one until Monday evening.

During the interpellation yesterday, Chang responded to the website design issue by saying that it was inappropriate for him to judge the design or intervene in the NSC's affairs before taking office, noting that he will humbly accept people's opinion over the website. Chang further added that he already ordered MOST staff to remove the worst parts of the website.

MOST yesterday said it will continue improving its official website.

As for the spokesperson issue, Chang said he has appointed Deputy Minister Lin Yi-ping (林一平) to double as the ministry's spokesman.
