CIB seizes 324 kilograms of ketamine, arrests 2 suspects

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB, 刑事局) announced yesterday that it seized 324 kilograms of smuggled ketamine shipped from mainland China, as well as the arrest of two suspects.

According to the CIB, the ketamine seized from the arrest was the second greatest amount of illegal drugs seized by the bureau so far in this year.

The CIB said that investigators received reports last December that there were individuals smuggling ketamine from mainland China, covering their illegal actions by claiming that the imported goods were hardware materials.

After further investigation, the CIB suspected that a 25-year-old man surnamed Chou and a 20-year-old man surnamed Chang might have been involve in this case.

According to the CIB, after monitoring the two suspects for a few months, the police discovered yesterday that Chou and Chang scheduled to drive to a spot to pick up their goods, so they followed them on the freeways and stopped Chang's vehicle. Chou, in a separate vehicle, escaped.

The CIB said that the police discovered a great amount of ketamine bagged in sacks.

Chou later was also arrested by the police at his residence by the police, the CIB said.

According to the CIB, the 324 kilograms of ketamine are over NT$160 million.

The CIB said that the bureau is currently working on investigating the source of the ketamine.

CIB Commissioner Lin Te-hua (林德華) said that this successful action conducted by the bureau and the police represents the CIB's determination to crack down on international drug smuggling.

According to the CIB, this January, 424 kilograms of ketamine and 302 kilograms of ephedrine were seized in Yehliu fishing port in New Taipei City, which was the largest amount of illegal drugs seized by the CIB so far in this year.
