Taipei has not received funds for 2017 Universiade: mayor

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) said yesterday that the construction budget for building the athletes' village for the 2017 Universiade Taipei, has not yet been allotted to the Taipei City Government, resulting in construction falling behind schedule.

Hau said he has reported this problem to President Ma Ying-jeou several times.

Taipei City Government spokesman Chang Chi-chiang (張其強) pointed out that the Taipei City Government applied for NT$1.4 billion in funds to build the athletes' village.

However, the city government has not received any money, which severely affects the construction process.

Due to the fact that the project should be the responsibility of the Ministry of Interior (MOI), it is reported that the delay in acquiring the funds may be related to the resignation of Minister of the Interior Lee Hong-yuan (李鴻源).

Lee responded that there should not be any problems with fund allocation.

In addition, everything is stated clearly in government documents, stated Lee.

"It will be meaningless to respond to the question since there should not be any problem," said Lee.

Responding to the fund allocation issue, Deputy Minister of the Interior Hsiao Chia-chi (蕭家淇) pointed out that since the funds in this case have gone over budget, the MOI has asked the Taipei City Government to re-adjust its application.

The MOI will finish the process as soon as possible and allot the funds to the Taipei City Government if the relevant documents are sent to the MOI, said Hsiao.

"The communication between the central government and local government has no problem," stated Hsiao.
