Military plans aircraft takeoff, landing drill on highway

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's military said recently that it is planning a drill for its fighter jets to practice emergency landings and takeoffs on a section of a highway in Southern Taiwan, as part of this year's Han Kuang series of military exercises.

The drill is being planned for September on the Minsyong section of the No. 1 National Highway in the southern county of Chiayi, the military said.

It is one of four sections of the No.1 National Highway on which emergency runways have been established for use in the event of war and will be used for aircraft emergency takeoff and landing practice for the first time.

The plan, however, is still in the early stages and the details have not yet been finalized, the military said.

The takeoff and landing drill will be part of the annual Han Kuang exercises, Taiwan's most important war games, which involve the Air Force, Navy and Army.

In previous Han Kuang exercises, similar drills have been held on the emergency runways on three other sections of the No.1 National Highway — Madou and Rende in Tainan, and Huatan in Changhua.

There is also an area on the Jiadong section of the provincial highway where military aircraft can take off and land in emergency situations.
