KMT, DPP form legislative alliance with aim toward economic progress

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A cross-party financial alliance in the Legislative Yuan was officially established to boost the economy of Taiwan and act as a conversation platform between all parties, the Legislative Yuan announced yesterday.

The alliance was convened by Kuomintang (KMT) lawmaker Hsieh Kuo-liang (謝國樑) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Gao Jyh-peng (高志鵬).

Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) said that forming this alliance is a very realistic and straightforward measure to make changes to Taiwan's economy.

DPP caucus whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) said that the topics that will be discussed in the alliance included the Cross-Strait Trade in Services Agreement, cultural agreements, free economic pilot zones and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Wang said that in the past, many legislative results concerning finance did not match the expectations of the public and businesses because different political parties tend to have their own opinions on certain issues.

Deputy caucus whip Wang Ting-son (王廷升) also said that since this alliance has members from all different political parties, this will be a great chance for all parties to solve tough issues like the Cross-Strait Trade In Services Agreement and free economic pilot zones.

The DPP is not always on the side of antagonism,” said Ker. “The biggest issue in Taiwan now is the economy, and the new Legislative Yuan sessions will be a crucial time for us to discuss topics like the Cross-Strait Trade In Services Agreement and the TPP.”

“It will require all political parties' efforts to solve issues like policies for industry and loosen regulations, so this is actually the best time to form a cross-party alliance,” said Ker.

“This alliance is not a patent for one party,” said Ker. “And no one political party can be absent from this alliance.”

Ker said that the issue over free economic pilot zones is whether or not special regulations will be passed in the new Legislative Yuan session, and if it will require a mutual agreement from different fields, including industry, government, experts, researchers, and the media.

According to the Legislative Yuan, a monthly meeting will be held and all legislators are required to attend to discuss key proposals and legislative progress.

The monthly meeting will be convened by Hsieh and Gao, and four individual teams will be established under the alliance based on four categories, including local and economic development, industrial development, financial policy, and the cultural and creative industry.
